During my undergraduate, I was given an opportunity to take part in a Government funded initiative called the ‘Student Associates Scheme’. This gave me an insight into teaching.  I spent ten days at a manic local secondary school, which was rated Satisfactory by Ofsted at the time. Although the classroom seemed very hectic at times, the teens were an absolute joy to work with!  I loved the buzz and atmosphere in the classroom, which was very different to my admin and sales job at the time.

In between my studies and part time work, I spent lots of time volunteering with underachieving children at learning centres within various sporting grounds, in addition to supporting women’s ESOL classes via local charities. It was rewarding to see the sense of pride and joy all the women and children felt whilst celebrating their achievements. What moved me most was their continuous drive to want to succeed and Education was that driver for them!

With encouragement from an inspirational Senior Lecturer at University, she supported my PGCE application every step of the way. My final placement took place at Sheringham and although I wasn’t the most confident of students, Senior Leaders and my Mentor were very supportive. They instilled lots of confidence and belief in me, now here I am – six years later!

One thing I enjoy about working life at Sheringham is everybody gives 110% -we all go the extra mile for each other. Everything we do is about the kids and for the kids; however we all support each other during the journey.  As a Year Group Leader, I love working with an inspirational and fun team of teachers and support staff. We all have very high standards, but we also know how to have a laugh. Our children are high achievers and come from diverse backgrounds; I love that our children are so motivated and love coming into school every day.

I’d recommend Sheringham to anybody looking to start their teaching career. There are lots of opportunities to grow, build friendships and develop at the school. I was fortunate to receive a two year sabbatical to teach internationally in a school we previously supported in Qatar.  Since returning to Sheringham, I’ve realised how international and truly diverse our own school is. We’re very committed to working as a team and building a community spirit.

One of the benefits of working in a Trust is meeting other like-minded colleagues and sharing great practice with each other. It’s also great to learn how each school has their own unique culture and way of doing things to benefit their children.
