Autumn Curriculum

Reading

This term your child will use all of their Destination Reader strategies learnt. These strategies are: summarising, predicting, evaluating, retrieval, questioning and making connections. We will read some non fiction texts that link to our R.E topic as well as fictional books. Some of these book titles include: Voices In The Park, Black, Dog as well as Mufaro's Beautiful Daughters.

Thank you to those families that have been really supporting their children at home with listening to your child read. Remember, we ask that children read for 10 minutes every night. They may want to read independently, but it's still great to ask them what they are reading and see if they can tell you some of their reflections which many fill out in their RHomebooks.

Writing

The children did some amazing writing in the Autumn term. Over the course of our Spring term, the children will be covering a variety of writing styles. We will be creating some persuasive brochures and writing some narratives. The children will begin to use their imagination more and use ideas from books they have read. Some grammar features that will be taught include: modal verbs, rhetorical questions and covering writing in 1st, 2nd and 3rd person.

We love children writing at home too. If your child does any writing at home, your child's teacher would love them to bring it in and share it with the rest of the class.

Maths

In our Maths lessons, the children will be looking at multiplication and division using 2 and 3 digit numbers. They will also cover fractions, decimals and time We will recap our timetables during fluency to prepare them for their multiplication check in the summer term. Please encourage your child to use TTRS everyday to support them with this as well as being the top class each week.

History and Science

In Spring 1, Year 4 will be learning all about the Romans, Saxons and Vikings and will have a workshop to support this. They will find out all about the different eras, how life was different during each period and how History has impacted our lives today.

During Science, the children will look at 'Sound and Electricity' and carry out experiments to help them visualise and learn. They will have the opportunity to ask questions and draw diagrams to represent their understanding.

You could visit the Museum of London and the Science Museum to help your child with their learning too.

Indoor PE

This term we will be focusing on Gymnastics. The children will learn how to balance and move in a very elegant way as well as create simple sequences on balance beams. The children will move on to vaulting using a spring board.

Jigsaw

This term in Jigsaw, children in Year 4 will be exploring the topic 'Dreams and Goals'. The focus is understanding who they want to be, what their dreams are and how they can achieve them.
